The experience
What is a sound bath?
A sound bath is time set aside for you to unwind while live, resonant sound fills the space around you. From a chair or mat, listen as Shannon plays crystal singing bowls, gong, and chimes. Come in, get comfy, and let the sound do the rest.
A session begins with a brief guided relaxation exercise, moves through about 45 minutes of sound and silence, and ends with a gradual return. The sound may be gentle or full. Your experience is your own; there is nothing to perform or believe.
“I’m here to hold the space and walk you through.”

Settle in

Listen without judging
About 45 minutes of bowls, chimes, gong, ambient sound, and silence unfold. You can simply notice the sounds as they change. Every person’s experience is different.
Return gently
The session closes with the gong and a gradual return. Finishing can feel like waking from a deep rest.

Before your first session
A few things you may be wondering.
Do I need to know how to meditate or believe anything?
At Accord sound baths, no meditation experience or particular belief is required. You can rest in a chair or on a mat and listen. There is nothing to perform or believe. Some sound bath providers use a religious or spiritual framework; Accord welcomes you without asking you to adopt one. If Shannon refers to ideas such as chakras, she presents them as beliefs some people hold, rather than expectations for your experience.
What should I wear and bring?
At Accord sound baths, there is no dress code or need for special clothes. Wear whatever lets you rest comfortably. Layers, a pillow, or a blanket may help you get comfy. Check your SCC class instructions for what to bring; for a group booking, confirm supplies with your organizer. Shannon can bring up to 10 mats and blankets for group sessions. Other studios may have different clothing or equipment requirements, so check with the host when attending elsewhere.
Do I have to lie on the floor?
At Accord sound baths, you do not have to lie on the floor. Chairs are welcome, and you can remain in your wheelchair. The SCC venue is wheelchair accessible. Contact SCC about public-class accommodations, or email Shannon to discuss access at a group venue. Accessibility and seating options vary between sound bath venues; confirm them with the organizer when choosing another event.
How long is a session?
At Accord sound baths, public SCC classes are scheduled for 90 minutes. A typical group experience lasts about an hour. Each includes a brief guided relaxation, about 45 minutes of sound and silence, and a gradual return; confirm the event schedule when booking.
How loud is it, and what if sound bothers me?
At Accord sound baths, the bowls, gong, and chimes may sound gentle or full. If you are sensitive to sound, contact Shannon before booking to discuss the setting and instrument placement. You can change position or step out if you feel uncomfortable.
Can I attend if I am pregnant or have a health concern?
At Accord sound baths, the experience is offered for rest and wellness, rather than medical care. If pregnancy, a hearing condition, or another health concern makes you unsure whether a live sound experience is suitable, ask your healthcare professional before attending. Shannon can answer questions about the session, but cannot provide medical clearance.
Will there be scents or essential oils?
At Accord sound baths, scent use can vary by event. If you have a fragrance sensitivity or allergy, contact Shannon before booking to ask whether scent will be used at your particular event and discuss your needs.
What if my mind wanders or I fall asleep?
At Accord sound baths, you do not have to clear your mind or create a particular feeling. You might feel restful, notice thoughts, or drift off. Experiences differ, and no particular result is promised.
Does research prove that sound baths treat stress or improve sleep?
At Accord sound baths, we offer time to rest with live sound and do not claim to treat a condition or improve sleep. Early singing-bowl research explores relaxation and mood. Research on meditation or yoga nidra involves different practices. Explore the research section for the evidence and its limits.
How do I register, and what if I need to cancel?
At Accord sound baths, public class registration and payment are handled by SCC. Visit SCC Continuing Education, select the Course Search button, and search “sound bath” for current classes and online registration. Confirm availability and cancellation policies with SCC before paying. For a group session, email Shannon for a quote. Confirm the date, supplies, travel charges, and cancellation terms in your written booking agreement.

What the research says
What does research say about sound baths?
Research on sound meditation is still developing. Many studies use Tibetan rather than crystal bowls, so their findings do not establish what an Accord session will do. Individual experiences vary; this is not medical treatment.

“Sound baths have changed my life. From the very first session with Shannon, I was surprised and delighted at the intensity and lingering bliss of the experience. Each time I attend is unique and nearly indescribable. Although I’ve attended more than 10 sound baths, I often find myself longing for the next session and the deep resonance of the bowls.”
